(3) (4) The "Aa" canal or river, which was once the main artery of the city connecting the town to the nearby North Sea and beyond, allowing Groningen trade with the Baltic Sea. It remains iconic with its "pakhuizen" (warehouses), now primary being homes. The façades have been adapted throughout the centuries, especially in the late 18th and 19th centuries, but most of these buildings still have a significant medieval core.

Also NS hates me specifically for not letting me plan multiple journeys in a row
Everyone wants to take the train to go to every province in the Netherlands in one day, until I pull out the maps and travel plans and they realize I'm actually 100% serious 😔
#i know a work around by saving the journeys piece by piece but its still annoying bc when i wanna change stuff i gotta do eeeeberuthing over#anyways i found a way to maybe shave of an half hour of travel of so by going to Rilland-bath#in Zeeland instead of going allthe way to Middelburg#which also kinda is hilarious to me bc im just gonna go to the first station in zeeland and IMMEDIATELY DIP OUT AND GO TO LIMBURG#baiiii#anyways im also looking at making Groningen-drenthe-friesland more efficient as NS keeps wanting to me to#take a one hour journey back to Drenthe and then go to friesland instead of going straigt to Friesland#so ill have to find a workaround there and maybe that could fix the issue#also i could see if i can be a bit more efficient by seeing if hitting smaller or larger cities is faster#bc smaller ones require less travel time but usually only have sprinters which are a bit slower and easier to miss#anyways i do know the rough order of provinces i want to hit which is nice

Terp/Thorp/Wierde/Warft/Værft
Most commonly known as “Terp”, by origin a Frisian word, Terps are actually known in a few places. Hang on tight, this is a long one.
The water rich lands of Dutch provinces Zeeland/Frisia (Terp) and Groningen (Wierde) - German regions Nordfriesland and Ostfriesland (Warft) and southern Denmark (Wærft) were in need of such constructions for basic quality of life.
Because the tides could freely enter the lower lands beyond the shoreline, life was to be lived intermittently. When the land was dry, sheep could graze the salt marsh. When water rose, people would retreat to the Terp.
A Terp can be made up out of a single church or farm/house to an entire small village. Concentrations of small Terps making up a village also exist. They are often surrounded by a salt marsh rampart (Kwelderwal).
Terps were made by plaggen. The top of sandy soils was taken out in little cubes, including the vegetation. The plag was then dried and compacted and stacked on top of each other, which causes an artificial hill allowing to build on.
Terp is also the Old-Frisian word which originates the Dutch word for village. Frisian culture allowed to spread because of their specialization in sheep’s wool. With most agricultural crops not being suited for salt marshes, and with the land flooded half of the day, lots of time was spent in producing high quality and highly sought after wool. This made the Frisians and especially the Terp people very rich, as seen in treasures, burials and clerical art.
Lots of Terps have been destroyed for peat mining or lost after abandonment.

Central is the church, on the right the historic village, the sheep pastures during floods and the encircling salt march rampart. Everything outside the rampart used to flood.

Hii guys!! ✨️ Continuing on what I've found in Mendels book, now I'll be sharing letters that King Louis Bonaparte sent to Daendels 🫡 There's is 14 of them so I'll make like a couple of series w this one 👀 Each part I will share 3 or 4 letters depending on each page in the Mendels book 😌 For now, I'm still trying to understand the meaning of each letter so I'm not rlly ready yet to give a summary on what are they talking abt 🫠 But I thought of sharing it now since why not haha ☺️ That's all for now, I'm sorry if there is misinformation due to translation 🙏 Thank you guys n have a nice day, stay safe 🌙
1st Letter :
Mr. General Daendels, I have received the letter that you wrote to me to announce your acceptance of the position of Extraordinary State Councilor to which I have appointed you. I know so well your services and your zeal for your country, that I have not doubted for a single moment the pleasure that I would give you by giving you the opportunity to use your knowledge for my service and the good of your country. On this, General Daendels, I pray to God that he has you in his holy keeping. Mainz, August 1806 LOUIS.
2nd Letter :
Mr. General Daendels, I accept the offer that you make with pleasure, and if we have war, I will immediately call you to the army and give you back the rank that you have occupied there with distinction. Let me know if you wish to enter the service in any case, On this, etc. Aix-la-Chapelle, September 13, 1806. LOUIS.
3rd Letter :
Mr. General Daendels, I inform you that I have appointed you Senior Military Commander of the Third Military Division and of the Third Army Division, stationed on the borders of the Ems. General Broux, the commanders of Delfzijl and Coewerden, the commanders of the depots of the various corps, the 9th line regiment (new number), all the various detachments of the other corps which could be in this district, all the buildings of the royal navy and the officers who command them, the national guards of these departments, the recruiting officers and non-commissioned officers who could be there, will be under your orders. You will take the greatest care to have the national guards formed in each important position, in accordance with the instructions that the administrations departmental have received from the Minister of the Interior. You will all wear your care to increase, by this means, the garrisons of Delfzijl and Coewerden, and mainly from Groningen. You will be instructed by Colonel Croiset means of defense, which floods can provide in a case of urgent need. You will always have in mind that your mission is to defend only Friesland and Groningen. You will use for this important purpose all the means that you can gather under this instruction. Above all, you will take the greatest care to keep me informed exactly of the movements of foreign troops on the banks of the Ems. Mr. General Daendels, I want you to bring back to their regiments the detachments which could be employed under your command- order, and which would not be part of the 9th line regiment. My only regret is not asking for the time to buy a Groningen hoodie. Everyone else was heading out and I thought I'd find time to get it elsewhere.
I could have gotten an Amsterdam one at the airport but that felt disloyal to my home province.

Her Majesty Queen Máxima, honorary chairman of MIND Us, payd a working visit to Groningen on Tuesday afternoon, September 5, in the context of the mental health of young people. One in three young people in the province of Groningen experiences poor psychosocial health. Compared to the rest of the Netherlands, Groningen has a relatively high level of use of youth assistance and long-term assistance programmes, for example due to poverty and earthquake problems.

Groningen - nature conservationists to court because Rammstein noise

"The Nature Conservancy Foundation from Meppel is suing both the municipality and the province of Groningen because of the upcoming concerts of the German band Rammstein in the city of Groningen. The nature club states that the noise permits granted are not in order.
That is why the conservationists want the court to look into this in an interim measure.
In the run-up to the concerts on 6 and 7 July in the Stadspark in Groningen, the municipality of Groningen granted an event permit with a one-off permit to make more noise than permitted. Rammstein is therefore allowed to produce 103 decibels instead of 100 decibels.
According to Secretary Geert Starre of the Nature Conservancy Watch, it has been shown that the volume will be much louder in reality. This not only leads to hearing damage in humans, but can also damage nature, says Starre. "We want to prevent that," he told ANP news agency . Some 52 species of birds are said to live around the Stadspark, many of which are still breeding, says Starre.
Noise permit would not have been properly tested
Nature Conservation Watch believes that the permits granted by the municipality and province have not been issued correctly. For example, there would be a lack of a nature test, which must be done when a permit is granted.
A permit has also been issued for setting off fireworks, a regular part of a Rammstein show. According to Starre, this will lead to additional damage. "There is no test that looks at all the consequences, for people and nature."
It is not yet known when the administrative court will consider the matter. The Northern Netherlands court could not be reached on Monday."

Since 1995 the Museumrailway S.T.A.R. (Stichting Stadskanaal Rail) exploits the railwayline between Veendam, Stadskanaal en Musselkanaal with historical steamtrains. The 26 km long track follows the border between the provinces of Groningen and Drenthe in the northeast of the Netherlands. The Deutsche Reichsbahn's Class 52 was a German steam locomotive built in large numbers during the Second World War. With over 7,000 locomotives, built across Europe, it was the most produced type of the so-called Kriegslokomotiven or Kriegsloks (war locomotives). 6,000+ locomotives passed into Russian ownership after the Second World War. Other operators of the type included Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Norway and Turkey. The Deutsche Reichsbahn (DRB) in East Germany (DDR) had 200 machines, including 52 8060-7, reconstructed to the new DRB Class 52.80. Stoomlocomotief 52 8060-7 van museumspoorlijn S.T.A.R. vertrekt vanaf station Stadskanaal. Museumspoorlijn S.T.A.R. Yeah I'm the dutch one, but there's 3 of us which is actually quite a lot if you care about the statistics- not nearly as many German ones, and Germany might just be a bit more populated than the Netherlands.
European suburbs (using that term with my limited knowledge acquired by infodump osmosis) are also a thing, but very different from American ones in that they frequently have stores and stuff on street level and Actual Houses on top, so that there's a decent chance at living most of your life within a 15 km area. Besides that, I don't know more about the wider continent, just my country, from personal experience and observation, which is also imperfect and likely off the mark. Again, not well-versed in the subjects of city-planning and transit.
My country's very livable though, due to pretty decent public transport (We complain but every 15 minutes with chance of cancellation and strikes is better than once an hour, maybe, some days, at a bus stop that's 4 meters long and has no shelter from the burning fucking sun with the next one 10 hours walking away) and probably size. It'll take a few hours (and some money if I care to travel without my student fare, which is nothing on weekdays. I know, I know, my country is kickass, except when it isn't), but I can fairly dependably get to the other side of the country if I want. I don't, because I have nothing to fucking see in the godawful provinces of Groningen and Friesland, but if I choose to I could.
Anyway fuck the USA. The car people are really fucking lobbying to ruin the chance of walkable and livable cities everywhere, but to me the USA is an example of how horrible it can get and the very idea terrifies me because I might see it. Yep, the more I learn about the world the more I fear the US, except this time it's more about what it represents instead of "If I go there I will probably get mugged, sexually abused, and/or hate crimed", which is probably still true but hey! Those chances were always there and not exactly decreasing due to recent choices, so I take my copium and live.

Confusions about Dutch vs Deutsch and Holland vs the Netherlands
The Netherlands - Geographical Size The Netherlands is a small European country situated along the North Sea, similar in size to 2x New Jersey, USA. Despite its modest area, the population reached 18 million in 2024, making it rank nr.5 of the most densely populated countries in the world, with a high number of people per square kilometer. The Randstad - One Big City? Foreigners often wonder if the Netherlands is just one sprawling city with suburbs, like London. When you look at the map, it’s easy to see why. Amsterdam, with 931,000 inhabitants (2024), is the capital and largest city. As Amsterdam continues to expand, it’s almost merging with other major cities like Utrecht, Rotterdam, and The Hague, forming the so-called ‘Randstad’. This urban cluster often feels like one giant city, but each has its own character and charm (and dialects). Though Amsterdam is the capital, the Dutch government is seated in The Hague. Other significant cities with populations over 250,000 include Arnhem (east), Eindhoven (south), and Groningen (north). Country Confusion - Why 'Holland'? Many expats are puzzled by the country’s name. Why is it called ‘Holland’? Well, the name Holland originates from 'Houtland', or 'Wooded Land', which was originally given to one of the medieval cores of what later became the modern state. The geo term 'Holland' is still used for 2 of the 12 provinces called North-Holland and South-Holland. However by calling the Netherlands "Holland" we would be skipping over the other 10 provinces like Utrecht, Gelderland and North-Brabant. So, the correct name is simply 'the Netherlands'. Dutch vs. Deutsch - Clearing Up the Language Confusion Is Dutch the same as Deutsch, the language spoken in Germany? This confusion has even led to historical misunderstandings, like mistaking the Amish, who speak Old German, for people from Holland. The truth is, while we’re called ‘Dutch,’ we speak ‘Nederlands,’ not ‘Deutsch.’ We share Germanic language roots with our neighbors, but that’s a topic for another blog!
